Digital quality inspections on wind turbines

Our customer, Siemens Gamesa is a global leader in the wind industry, with a dominant presence across the entire spectrum of wind, including onshore, offshore, and services. Siemens Gamesa is well positioned to unlock the full potential of wind energy. Driven by their commitment to innovation, they strive to push the technological boundaries of what is possible and deliver wind at a more competitive cost.

As part of this innovation process, Siemens Gamesa initiated a digital transformation project to fully digitize quality inspections of wind turbines in every stage of the production process, from the intake of materials and parts to the inspection of onshore and offshore wind turbines in operation.

Every digital transformation project has its own pitfalls and challenges, but this use case was particularly challenging. Some quality inspections are executed offshore, where internet and wifi connection are often unavailable. Due to the special conditions of working in an offshore environment, the quality inspectors are pushed to set the highest standards of safety during inspection execution.

The digital transformation project, lead by Jesper Kronborg Pedersen and Regina Boda, was awarded at the Process Excellence Conference OPEX World Summit 2023 (Miami) as BEST DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION INITIATIVE, which is designed to recognize success in individual projects where processes are improved and enabled by technology. Siemens Gamesa was assessed on their ability to demonstrate successful results across people, processes and technology; and judged on implementation success, future sustainability, governance and business impact. The digital innovation project was also awarded at the Digital Manufacturing Conference of SymphonyAI Industrial.
